WHEELING, W.Va. — A dominant 13-goal first half propelled the IUP women's lacrosse team to a 20-6 road win over Wheeling on Wednesday evening.
Kathryn Burke led IUP with five goals and had two assists. Three players contributed three goals each and combined for five assists. IUP managed 39 shots on goals and limited Wheeling to only 18. The Hawks also picked up 33 ground balls, nearly 20 more than Wheeling.
Maggie Kilgallon scored the first goal for the Hawks 19 seconds into the game and a minute later Maggie Boyle found the net. Wheeling added two consecutive goals and then the teams each scored. Burke finished the quarter adding three goals while Brenna Whiteside netted one.
IUP scored three goals early in the second quarter, reaching double digits, 10-3, before Wheeling added their fourth. In three minutes, the Hawks added three more goals before halftime.
The third quarter was low scoring with each team recording one goal. Kilgallon scored at the 7:27 minute mark, putting IUP ahead by nine, 14-5.
IUP netted five goals before the Cardinals added their sixth and final goal. Angela Xenakis rounded out the scoring for the Hawks with a goal at 1:54 in the fourth.
