INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP baseball team secured a decisive 20-2 non-conference win over Fairmont State on Tuesday after they managed 19 runs in the first two innings.
On the mound,
Bryce DeVan began the day with three quick outs in the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, IUP managed to score 10 runs off of nine hits, which included two home runs.
Ricardo Aponte reached base after he was hit by a pitch, stole second, and then scored when
Mitchell Grosch homered. Third at bat,
Mike Huber doubled down the left field line and scored after
Elijah Dunn singled to left field, but was caught out at second.
Cayden Bender drew a walk and
Robert Carfagno singled, and both crossed the plate when
Peyton Johnson hit a three-run homer, Hawks ahead 6-0.
Aponte singled to left field for an RBI, which sent
Au'sean Owens to score after he drew a walk and stole second. Huber doubled down the left field line to bring in two more runs, scorers were Aponte and Grosch. Huber then scored a run himself after he advanced from a wild pitch. Dunn capped the inning with a swinging strikeout, IUP jumped ahead by double digits, 10-0.
IUP brought in another nine runs in the bottom of the second inning off of seven hits, despite Fairmont State making a change on the mound. Bender tripled down the right-field line and scored when Carfagno singled.
Teague Hoover brought in Carfagno and advanced Johnson to second from his single to left field. Hoover and Johnson advanced on a wild pitch and then both scored from Aponte and Grosch hits. Two singles, two walks, and a flyout brought in five more runs to finish off the second inning ahead 19-0.
Fairmont State scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and in the top of the eighth.
Dunn scored IUP's final run of the afternoon after he got on base with a single followed by a Bender triple which sent him home.
