INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP baseball team won the series against Slippery Rock after today's doubleheader, 3-1. The Crimson Hawks fell in game one, 9-5, but rallied in the second game for a 10-3 victory. This win also marked head coach
Steve Kline's 100
th career victory at IUP.
Game 1
Play started out slow for the Crimson Hawks in the first game while Slippery Rock managed to get two runs on the board in the first two innings. Despite putting the bat onto the ball, IUP consistently hit the ball directly at players until the fourth inning. IUP finally got out of their slump with a single to left field from
Mitchell Grosch.
Elijah Dunn homered to center field, which brought in two runs for the Crimson Hawks in the bottom of the fourth, which tied the game at two runs each.
In the top of the fifth, Slippery Rock responded with a two-run home run of their own followed by a hit, which put them back out in front, 5-2. Taking advantage of a balk and a wild pitch, Slippery Rock added two more runs to their score to get ahead by five, 7-2.
In the bottom of the inning,
Davin Landers quickly answered with a double, which brought in
Peyton Johnson.
Teague Hoover wrapped up the hitting in the fifth with a home run, cutting Slippery Rock's lead to two runs, 7-5.
Slippery Rock added two more runs in the top of the seventh. Although bases were loaded, IUP was not able to piece any hits together, resulting in a loss for the Crimson Hawks, 9-5.
Game 2
This time around, IUP came out of the gate fast, with hits from
Ricardo Aponte and
Robert Carfagno, in combination with another home run from
Elijah Dunn, the Crimson Hawks were leading 4-0 at the end of the first.
Slippery Rock got back into the game in the third, scoring three runs of their own. IUP's
Peyton Johnson responded with a sacrifice fly, which allowed for Dunn to touch home, changing IUP's lead to 5-3 after three innings.
Mike Huber opened up the sixth inning with a home run to left center, and later on, Dunn scored, adding two runs to the score for the Crimson Hawks. IUP wrapped up the scoring in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run home run from Dunn, granting the Crimson Hawks the win over Slippery Rock, 10-3.
On the mound for the Crimson Hawks was Nate Mankoski, who pitched 6.0 innings, gave up five hits, and three runs.
