PREVIEW: Women's basketball takes on Edinboro in PSAC Quarterfinals on Wednesday

INDIANA, Pa. – The IUP women's basketball team will head to top-seeded Edinboro on Wednesday, March 5, for PSAC Quartefinals matchup.

PSAC TOURNMAENT OVERVIEW 

  • No.4 IUP defeated No. 5 California (Pa.) in the First Round of the PSAC Tournament Monday evening, 58-57.
  • Wednesday'ss PSAC Quarterfinal matchup features the No. 4 seed IUP and the No. 1 seed Edinboro.
  • IUP has totaled 26 PSAC tournament appearances posting an overall 33-20 record that includes six PSAC Championship titles and nine championship game appearances. 
  • The win against Cal U marked head coach Craig Carey's first PSAC Tournament win since his arrival in 2022.
  • Since 2020, IUP has only played in the KCAC during the PSAC tournament. The last time IUP advanced to the championship game was in 2020 against Gannon but fell short 50-40. 
  • Following the PSAC First Round and Quarterfinals, the semifinal and championship rounds will be contested on March 8-9 at the highest remaining West seed. 

TIPOFF NOTES

>> Shamia Strayhorn led the charge for the Crimson Hawks, posting 17 points, followed by Nyshae' Weaver with 13, and Ellie Wilkerson with eight.
>> Weaver was named PSAC West Co-Athlete of the Week on February 24th for the third time this season and received PSAC honors for the fifth overall time this season.
>> Weaver ranks 16th nationally with 14 double-doubles this season. Weaver is also ranked second in Division II with her field goal percentage and seventh in rebounds per game
>> Wilkerson was named PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7.
>> The Hawks are not receiving in the WBCA Division II Coaches Poll and in the D2CSC Media Poll. IUP sits in second in the Atlantic Region behind PSAC opponent Seton Hill.
>> The Hawks are currently averaging 69.6 PPG, 40.4 RPG, 13.5 APG, 9.2 SPG, and 3.0 BPG. IUP is shooting .444 from the field, .300 beyond the arc, and .691 from the free throw line.
>> IUP is ranked sixth in the conference for scoring defense, limiting their opponents to an average of 59.5 PPG.
>> The Hawks have not faced Edinboro in the playoffs since 2022, which resulted in an IUP loss, 63-55.
>> Last season, Edinboro made it to the PSAC Quarterfinals, where they lost to Gannon, 70-42.
>> Edinboro headed into the playoffs at the top of the West side, resulting in a first-round bye.
>> Edinboro closed out their regular season with a win against Cal U, 81-79.
>> Morgan Gentile led the Fighting Scots with 23 points, and she picked up 10 rebounds.
>> Ashten Boogs followed with 20 points and eight rebounds, and Gabby McDuffie trailed with 18 points and nine rebounds. 


EDINBORO AT A GLANCE

Edinboro has an overall record of 22-5 and a conference record of 17-3. Two of their conference losses came from IUP, 83-70 and 76-72 OT, and from Seton Hill, 73-67. Edinboro is averaging 74.0 PPG, 39.6 RPG, 14.9 APG, 16.0 TO/G, 9.5 SPG, and 4.2 BPG. The Fighting Scots are shooting .450 from the field, .310 from the arc, and .790 from the line.

Edinboro's top point scorer is graduate student guard, Morgan Gentile. Gentile is averaging 15.2 PPG, 5.7 RPG, and 4.7 APG. Gentile is shooting .411 from the field, .293 from the arc, and .757 from the line. 

Edinboro's top rebounder is graduate student guard, Gabby McDuffie. McDuffie is averaging 6.6 RPG, 10.6 PPG, and 1.4 APG. McDuffie is shooting .424 from the field, .384 from the arc, and .831 from the line
 

LAST MATCHUP

In their most recent matchup, IUP defeated Edinboro on senior day in overtime, 76-72. Strayhorn led the Hawks with 23 points, Weaver posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Wilkerson added 14 points of her own. Despite having more turnovers than IUP, Edinboro scored more points off of turnovers than IUP (18 vs. 12). Edinboro also had a higher 3PT% (.438 vs. .308) and FT% (.786 vs. .545). Gentile and McDuffie led Edinboro with 18 points and eight rebounds a piece, followed by Hayley Sims with 15 points. 

HOME COURT ADVANTAGE

Since the opening of the KCAC in the 2011-12 season, IUP has had an outstanding home court advantage to go along with a nationally prominent basketball program. 

IUP boasts a 167-31 (.848) record in home games since the venue opened, not losing more than four home games in a single season during that span. At the KCAC, the IUP women have won: 

- 12 of 15 games in 2024-2025 (12-3) 

-13 of 15 games in 2023-24 (13-2) 

-13 of 17 games in 2022-23 & 2021-22 (13-4)

PSAC PLAYOFFS

IUP is heading out to Edinboro for the PSAC Quarterfinals. Since 1984, IUP has appeared in the PSAC tournament 26 times, has appeared in the PSAC West Championship eight times, and has made it to the PSAC Championship six times. 

Also on Wednesday, Bloomsburg is heading out to Lock Haven, West Chester goes out to Kutztown, and Seton Hill goes out to Gannon. The winner of the quarterfinals will play in the semifinals on Saturday, March 8 . 

WILKERSON MAKING HER WAY

Ellie Wilkerson has started 23 of the games she has appeared in. She earned PSAC West Athlete of the Week on January 7 after her impressive performances at Daemen and Edinboro. Wilkerson posted her best performance of the season against Daemen, scoring 20 points on .643 shooting from the field with nine made field goals. For the week, she averaged 17.5 points per game, 33 minutes, and shot better than .500 from the field. 

Overall, Wilkerson is averaging 28.4 MPG, 10.6 PPG, 4.0 RPG, and is shooting .433 from the field. She has totaled 32 steals so far this season and has recorded at least one steal in every game leading up to Gannon. She has recorded at least two steals in 10 games this season, most recently snagging four against Seton Hill. She has scored 15+ points five times this season. 

A LOOK INTO STRAYHORN

Senior guard Shamia Strayhorn leads the team in MPG, averaging 34.3 minutes, placing her at 6th in the PSAC. Strayhorn is shooting .422 from the field and has contributed 110 rebounds, 60 assists, 51 steals, and six blocks to the team. Strayhorn has led the team in assists seven times this season, followed by steals eight times. Her field goal percentage ranks 9th in the PSAC (.422) from 370 attempts.

WONDERFUL WEAVER

Junior forward Nyshae' Weaver has been making a name for herself this season. Weaver was named PSAC West Co-Athlete of the Week on February 24 for the third time this season and received PSAC honors for the fourth overall time this season. Weaver is leading the team with 11.4 RPG, placing her at second in the conference. On top of her rebounding, Weaver is averaging 15.2 PPG, which is the second highest on the team, and 10th in the conference. Weaver is also shooting .659 from the field, which is first in the PSAC and second in the NCAA DII. On top of her impressive PPG and RPG numbers, Weaver has tallied 14 double-doubles this season alone. 

FRESH OFF THE BENCH

IUP has utilized players off the bench, including Lily Jordan and Macie Jarrett. Freshman Jordan is leading the bench in points, shooting .467 from the field and averaging 7.2 PPG. Averaging 24.3 MPG, Jordan has notched 121 rebounds, 42 assists, 19 steals, and 12 blocks. Macie Jarrett has witnessed more minutes this new year, averaging 7.2 MPG, all while averaging .467 from the field and .714 from the arc, Jarrett has posted 18 rebounds, three assists, and four steals.
