JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- The IUP baseball team completed the series sweep over Pitt-Johnstown Friday afternoon after shutting out the Mountain Cats 6-0 in game one and using an eight-run sixth inning to get ahead in the second game.
IUP is now 22-23 overall and 15-9 in conference action.
Game one
On the mound for the Hawks was Jake Black, who gave up just one hit and had four strikeouts. Five players recorded two hits each, and another two batters each recorded one.
The first four runs came in the top of the fourth inning. Ricardo Aponte led off with a single to center field, stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout. Aponte scored on Elijah Dun's RBI single to left field. With two outs, three consecutive hits drove in three more runs to put IUP ahead, 4-0.
Davin Landers' home run in the top of the sixth drove in Mitchell Grosch to put the Hawks at six runs.
Game two
IUP used an eight-run sixth inning to get back in the lead 11-4, and the Hawks held on in the seventh.
In the first inning, Dunn's RBI single to center field drove in Mike Huber. UPJ responded in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at one.
Au'sean Owens singled to left field and came around on Aponte's homer to left field to put IUP ahead 3-1. The Mountain Cats tied up the game once again in the bottom of the fourth and got into the lead in the bottom of the fifth.
In the sixth inning, IUP scored eight runs on five hits, including two home runs from Mitchell Grosch and Dunn.
Grosch led off the inning with a homer to left field. Two walks and Davin Lander's single loaded the bases. Owens singled up the middle, scoring Cayden Bender and Peyton Johnson. Aponte drew a walk to load the bases with Owens on second and Landers on third. Huber's double drove in Landers and Owens, while Dunn followed with a home run for three RBI to put the Hawks in double digits, 11-4.
