QUAKERSTOWN, Pa. — The (4W) IUP softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure a run-rule victory over (5W) California (Pa.) to stay alive in the elimination bracket on the second day of the PSAC Tournament.
Jaycee Haidze went 3-for-4 at the plate, scored one run, and batted in five. On the mound was Kendall Young who improved to 16-6 on the season.
In the second inning, Delaney Patella drew a walk and came around on Jess Cekada's two run home run to left field to put IUP on the board, 2-0.
IUP scored another two runs in the fourth inning. Patella singled through the left side and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Haidze's RBI single to left center drove in Patella. Haidze advanced on a groundout and scored on Madison Pikula's RBI single up the middle.
The Vulcans scored two runs in the top of the fifth on three hits.
In the bottom of the inning, Reagan Rand and Paige Truax drew consecutive walks and a groundout advanced them both. Haidze's two RBI single to left center drove in both runners to put IUP ahead 6-2.
IUP limited California (Pa.) to just one hit in the top of the sixth, just before IUP scored four runs in the bottom to secure a run rule victory.
Maddie Griffin led off the inning with a single up the middle. She scored on Jordan Sylvia's home run to center field, her sixth this season. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with no outs. Haidze's single up the middle to drove in both Truax and Rand to put the Hawks in double digits and ahead by eight runs.
IUP will play (2E) Kutztown in game 14 at 3:00 p.m.
