GREENSBURG, Pa. -- The IUP women's tennis team concluded another outstanding season in the second round of the DII NCAA Atlantic Regional on Tuesday. No. 2 seed IUP came up just short in a hard-fought battle against No. 3 seed Slippery Rock, 3-4.
IUP concluded the season with a 17-7 overall record, captured its fifth consecutive PSAC title, and made its 17th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The Hawks started strong by securing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 pair earned a 6-3 victory, while the No. 3 team posted a 6-2 win. The No. 2 doubles match was left unfinished with IUP leading 4-3.
At No. 1 singles, Lieselotte Hartlohner dropped the opening set 3-6 but rallied to take the next two sets, 6-1, 6-3. Playing at No. 2 singles,
Ming Deewajee started strong with a 6-3 win in the first set. In the second set, she was clipped 6-7 but came back to win the third 6-2.
Asel Calbay at No. 5 singles dropped both sets with scores of 3-6. At No. 4 singles,
Hannah Beitat dropped the opening set 1-6 but battled back to take the second 6-2, forcing a decisive third. Despite the momentum shift, she came up short in the final set, 4-6.
Dani Ramos at No. 3 singles fought hard to take the first set 7-6, but was edged in the second set, 6-7, to force the third. Ramos was unable to make the comeback, falling 0-6.
With the score tied at 3-3, the match came down to No. 6 singles.
Annemiek Sterk lost a close first set but came back to win the second with set scores of 6-7, 7-5. Sterk made the comeback to tie the third set at 6-6, but was unable to capture the tiebreaker (4-7).
