No. 8 IUP looks to extend streak against Slippery Rock

INDIANA, Pa. — No. 8 IUP will hit the road Wednesday to face PSAC West rival Slippery Rock, playing in its first  road game since late December.

The Crimson Hawks are off to their best start under head coach Craig Carey at 13-0 overall and 7-0 in PSAC play. IUP has won four straight against The Rock, last losing in Slippery Rock in 2023.

Nyshae' Weaver leads the Hawks with 15.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Weaver has recorded four double-doubles this season, including two against top-20 teams and two in PSAC matchups, most recently against Pitt-Johnstown. She ranks among the nation's best in field-goal percentage at .693.

Sharpshooter Teresa Maggio has connected on 28 three-pointers this season, hitting 38 percent from long range. She scored a career-high seven steals and five three-pointers in IUP's PSAC opener against Kutztown. Maggio has scored in double figures in all but two games this season.

The Crimson Hawks rank among Division II's top five in scoring defense, scoring margin, field-goal percentage and rebound margin, and are top 10 in opponent field-goal percentage.

Slippery Rock enters the matchup 5-9 overall and 3-5 in conference play, sitting at the bottom of the PSAC West. The Rock is on a five-game losing streak, with its last win coming Dec. 20 in a double-overtime victory over Shippensburg. Slippery Rock is 1-4 at home this season.

Third-year head coach Ryenn Micaleti leads Slippery Rock, posting a 14-51 record. The Rock is led by Iyanna Wade, the WPIAL's second all-time leading scorer, averaging 13 points per game. Three starters are scoring in double figures this season, and all five have played every game.

IUP has dominated the series historically, winning 59 games against Slippery Rock since 1984, including a 29-game win streak that ended in the 2022-23 season. Under Carey, the Crimson Hawks are 4-2 against The Rock. The last meeting at the KCAC saw IUP prevail 59-45.

Tipoff is set for Wednesday at Slippery Rock at 5:30 PM.
