PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The IUP women's tennis team returned to competition Saturday with a strong opening day at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational, winning 11 of its 12 matches across singles and doubles play.
The Crimson Hawks went unbeaten in doubles action, beginning the day with victories from Lea Von Kozierowski and Isabelle Oikawa Torres, along with Hannah Beitat and Elina Mondani. Von Kozierowski and Oikawa Torres earned a 6-2 victory over a Carnegie Mellon pairing, while Beitat and Mondani rolled to a 6-0 win against a duo from Case Western Reserve.
IUP continued its perfect doubles showing with victories from Asel Calbay and Chia Ying-Lu, along with Ifigeneia Kafka and Charliz Tabili. Calbay and Ying-Lu defeated their Carnegie Mellon opponents, 6-1, while Kafka and Tabili battled to a 7-5 victory.
The Crimson Hawks carried the momentum into singles play, posting a 7-1 record.
Beitat earned a victory that required an additional set, while Tabili secured her match with a 7-5 victory in the deciding set. Oikawa Torres battled through a first-set tiebreaker for a 7-6 victory before cruising to a 6-0 win in the second set.
Calbay also responded after dropping her opening set, 6-2. She answered with a 6-2 victory in the second set before completing the comeback with a 10-4 win in the deciding set.
Von Kozierowski battled throughout IUP's lone singles setback of the day. She claimed the opening set, 7-5, before falling 6-3 and 10-4 over the final two sets.
IUP returns to action Sunday for the second and final day of the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
