IUP Softball Splits, Earns First Win at WV Indoor Tournament

Triadelphia, West Virginia — The Indiana University of Pennsylvania softball team earned its first victory of the season Sunday, splitting a doubleheader on day two of the West Virginia Indoor Tournament. The Crimson Hawks fell to University of Indianapolis in game one before defeating Wheeling University in the nightcap.

In the opener, UIndy pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the win. IUP finished with three runs on six hits but committed three errors. Taylor Bumgardner took the loss despite a strong outing, pitching six innings and allowing four earned runs on six hits while striking out nine.

At the plate, Madison Pikula collected two hits from the leadoff spot, while first baseman Olivia Hillegas drove in two runs with a single.

Game two brought a breakthrough for the Crimson Hawks as senior Kendall Young delivered 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball, scattering five hits to earn her first win of the season.

Offensively, Pikula added three more hits in the victory, while she and Maddie Griffin each drove in two runs from the top of the order. IUP totaled nine hits in the win.

The Crimson Hawks are scheduled to travel to Fairmont State University on Wednesday for a doubleheader against the Falcons. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
