IUP Sweeps Shepherd in Saturday Doubleheader

INDIANA, Pa. (AP) — Indiana (Pa.) used a late offensive surge in the opener and steady hitting in the nightcap to sweep Shepherd in a nonconference baseball doubleheader Saturday.

The Crimson Hawks rallied for five runs in the sixth inning to break open the first game and defeat the Rams 7-2 in the seven-inning contest.

After Shepherd took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and added another run in the sixth, IUP responded with a decisive sixth frame. The Crimson Hawks scored five runs in the inning to turn a tight game into a comfortable advantage before closing it out. IUP finished with five hits and did not commit an error, while Shepherd totaled five hits and one error.

Indiana carried the momentum into the second game, edging Shepherd 8-7 in a back-and-forth matchup.

The Rams scored three runs in the third inning and later added three more in the seventh, but the Crimson Hawks answered throughout the game. IUP plated three runs in the third, added three more in the fifth and tacked on two in the sixth to build enough cushion to hold off Shepherd's late push.

Indiana collected 11 hits in the second game, while Shepherd finished with 10. The Crimson Hawks stranded five runners and committed one error, while the Rams left 13 on base.
