PITTSBURGH — Survive and advance.
That's the goal this time of year, and it's exactly what the Indiana (Pa.) women's basketball team did, defeating No. 7 seed Holy Family 57-52 in overtime in the Elite Eight at UPMC Cooper Field House on the campus of Duquesne University.
The Crimson Hawks advanced despite an uncharacteristic shooting performance, making just two 3-pointers. One came on the opening basket of the game, while the other came from an unlikely source — sophomore Madison Zavasky — late in the fourth quarter to pull IUP within two points and shift momentum.
Teresa Maggio led the way for IUP, finishing with a team-high 20 points and a game-high nine steals. She also went 5-for-5 from the free-throw line. As a team, the Crimson Hawks forced turnovers at a high rate, recording a season-high 18 steals, with four players tallying at least two.
Nyshae' Weaver provided consistency throughout, finishing with 14 points and eight rebounds to narrowly miss a double-double. Senior Marin Miller, fresh off her heroics in the Atlantic Region championship, added a season-high eight rebounds.
Holy Family slowed the tempo, but IUP capitalized in transition, outscoring the Tigers 18-5 in fast-break points.
With the win, IUP advances to the national semifinals and will face No. 3 seed Colorado Mesa, which defeated Minnesota Duluth 81-59 earlier in the day. Tipoff is scheduled for Thursday, with game time to be announced.
