IUP bats erupt in 28-run sweep of Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — The IUP baseball team completed a four-game, two-day sweep of Lock Haven on Saturday, scoring 28 runs across two games while allowing just eight.

It marked IUP's first four-game Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference sweep of the season, lifting the Crimson Hawks to 9-7 in the PSAC West.

First baseman Jonathan Simpson stayed hot after his Game 2 grand slam Friday, driving in three runs with two extra-base hits and a sacrifice fly. Camden Rhude, the reigning National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association hitter of the week, continued his strong play with six RBIs, collecting a double, triple and home run across the two games.

Shortstop David Kessler added to the offensive surge, hitting his second home run in as many days to bring his season total to 12. Michael Kramer also made an impact, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two doubles in Game 2.

On the mound in Game 1, IUP used five pitchers. Freshman Nathan Porath earned his third win of the season, tossing two innings of relief after starter Nathan Mankoski allowed three earned runs in one inning. Braden Shepherd, Emillio Rodriguez and Luke Lea combined for the final four innings, allowing just one hit.

In Game 2, the Crimson Hawks used six pitchers. Starter Jake Detwiler went 1 1/3 innings, while Gabe Johnson earned his first win with 2 2/3 innings of one-hit ball. Sebastian Rosado-Gundin, Anthony Alberty, Mark Luke and Angelito Ruguian Jr. closed out the final three innings.

With the sweep, IUP remains in the middle of the PSAC West playoff race. The Crimson Hawks will return home Tuesday to host Fairmont State in a nonconference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Dougherty Field.
