Kirsch lifts IUP past Point Park

PITTSBURGH — Less than a month after combining for 36 runs in a high-scoring matchup, IUP and Point Park met again Tuesday at Dougherty Field in a much different contest, with IUP earning a 5-3 win.

Point Park scored in the first inning, but IUP answered with runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Carter Kirsch delivered the go-ahead hit in the eighth inning, a two-run single up the middle that scored Alex VanSickle and Michael Kramer.

Ricardo Aponte led IUP at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Kirsch finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs.

The Crimson Hawks recorded three extra-base hits, all doubles, from Aponte, Camden Rhude and David Kessler. Aponte and senior Erik Rhodes each stole a base.

Anthony Alberty started for IUP, pitching 3 1/3 innings and allowing one earned run. Five relievers followed, with freshman Nathan Porath earning his second save of the season.

IUP returns to PSAC play Friday, hosting California (Pa.) at Dougherty Field. First pitch of Game 1 is 1 p.m., with Game 2 to follow. The Crimson Hawks will then travel to Washington, Pa., to face California (Pa.) at EQT Park to complete the four-game series.
