SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The IUP Crimson Hawks baseball showcased its power at the plate with six home runs across two games, but ultimately split the doubleheader with Slippery Rock baseball to earn a split in the four-game weekend series.
In game one, Slippery Rock jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning off Cameron Copple, but the right-hander settled in as IUP responded with three runs in the second inning and maintained control the rest of the way.
Teague Hoover, Camden Rhude and David Kessler each homered for the Crimson Hawks. Hoover led the way with three RBIs, while Rhude and Kessler drove in two apiece.
Robert Carffagno added the first triple of his collegiate career, finishing 2-for-3 with a single and also reaching on an error. Copple earned his third win of the season, tossing four innings and striking out four.
In game two, Slippery Rock used a four-run second inning to seize control and built an 8-2 lead after four innings. The Rock out-hit IUP 12-5 and secured a 9-5 victory.
Braden Shepherd took the loss for IUP, allowing five earned runs over two innings.
The Crimson Hawks return home Wednesday for a doubleheader against West Liberty at Dougherty Field. First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m.
