DETROIT, Mich. – IUP women's volleyball closed its busy opening weekend with two tough tests at the Wayne State Warrior Invitational on Saturday. The Crimson Hawks faced Quincy and host Wayne State, two teams that combined for a 48-13 record in 2025 and both advanced to the NCAA regional tournament.
IUP dropped its first match of the day to Quincy in four sets before bouncing back with a four-set victory over Wayne State to close the weekend.
Quincy 3, IUP 1
The Crimson Hawks started fast in their mid-morning matchup against Quincy, taking the opening set, 25-17.
Quincy responded after dropping the first set, winning the next three to secure the match. The Hawks stayed within striking distance throughout the fourth set before Quincy closed out the match with a 25-21 victory.
After recording a season-high 73 kills Friday night against Northwood, IUP was held to 45 against Quincy, its lowest total through the first five matches of the season.
The Crimson Hawks finished with a .164 hitting percentage, marking the first time this season IUP hit below .200. Despite the performance, IUP remains among the top five teams in the PSAC in hitting percentage through 21 sets.
IUP 3, Wayne State 1
The Crimson and Gray flipped the script in the final match of the weekend, taking down tournament host Wayne State in four sets.
The Warriors edged IUP in an opening set that needed extra points, 26-24, before the Crimson Hawks responded by taking the next two sets, including a 25-22 victory in the second. IUP finished off the weekend with a 25-20 victory in the fourth set to secure the match.
IUP held a 52-49 advantage in kills against the Warriors. Through the opening weekend, the Crimson Hawks have allowed an average of 48.6 kills per match, while opponents are hitting .243.
Sophomore Sammy Stephens led the way offensively with 14 kills, setting a new career high. Stephens surpassed her previous career best of 12, which she recorded Thursday against Findlay.

IUP begins its home schedule Friday and Saturday, Sept. 4-5, hosting the Crimson Hawk Classic at the KCAC. The five-team field features IUP, West Liberty, Daemen, Lake Erie and Ashland.
Four matches are scheduled for Friday, beginning with IUP against West Liberty at 11 a.m. Five matches will follow Saturday, starting with West Liberty against Lake Erie at 9 a.m.
