California 3, Winston-Salem State 0
Kaitlyn Schilling limited Winston-Salem State to three hits to lead California to a 3-0 win over the Rams to stay alive in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional at Podbielski Field.
The Vulcans (29-13) will meet Kutztown in another elimination game at 2:30 with the winner facing host and top-seed IUP immediately following. The Crimson Hawks, the only undefeated team remaining in the tournament, can advance to the Super Regionals with a win later this afternoon.
Winston-Salem State, the champions of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, finished its season with a record of 29-13.
Schilling (10-6) walked one and struck out seven in the complete game effort. Brittany Lane took the loss for the Rams, allowing five hits while walking five and fanning seven.
The game was suspended after 1 1-2 innings Saturday by steady rain in western Pennsylvania. When it resumed, the Vulcans scored the only run they would need in the fourth when Alyson Johnson walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Kristen McKenzie.
Winston-Salem State got the tying run on base to lead off the bottom of the sixth on a single by Tanaya Pettus. But the Rams could not advance the runner when Pettus was forced at second on a sacrifice attempt by Candace Spinks, and the next two batters grounded out.
California added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh when Jillian Russell slammed her 14th home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center.
