The Student Athletic Advisory Committee of Indiana University of Pennsylvania is hosting its 3rd Annual 5K Run/Walk for Parkinson's.  All proceeds from this event will be donated to the National Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder first described by Dr. James Parkinson in "An Essay on the Shaking Palsy" in 1817.

Some physicians use the term "parkinsonism" in the initial evaluation and diagnosis. Parkinsonism is an umbrella term applied to the clinical syndromes that share the cardinal movement disorders of resting tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity and postural instability.

A clinical diagnosis of PD is made by assessing motor function or movement. The diagnosis is made by the presence of at least two of the four cardinal motor or movement symptoms associated with PD. When the symptoms are present, medications which are known to reduce the symptoms are then often used to increase the likelihood of making a correct clinical diagnosis.

There are between 8,000 and 10,000 people living with Parkinson's Disease in our area.  Please come out on May 4t 2014 to help the Student Athletic Advisory Committee and IUP Athletics raise funds for the National Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania.  The event is open to everyone and we will look forward to seeing you there!

All registered participants will go on a 5K run/walk through the South Campus of Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) starting and ending at University Drive by the softball/baseball fields (off of Rose St.).  Upon registration, each participant will be entered to win various prizes.
