Benito Mendizabal joins the IUP baseball program as a volunteer assistant for the 2020-21 academic year.
Originally from Clearwater, Florida, Mendizabal began his coaching career locally in 2016 with the Homer-Center Wildcats. After completing a two-year stint with the Wildcats, he accepted a position at Ave Maria University in Ave Maria, Florida. During his time there, he served in a dual role as an assistant coach and head junior varsity coach. Following a year at Ave Maria, he returned north and accepted an assistant coaching position at Wheeling University, where he also served as interim head coach.
As a student-athlete, Mendizabal committed to play collegiate baseball at Seton Hill University. After an injury his freshman year, he transferred to Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. He found himself competing one more season before hanging up his cleats due to the injury, where he began to pursue his dream in coaching.
Mendizabal earned his bachelor degree in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in 2017 and his master's degree in Business Administration from Wheeling University in 2020.
