John Pettina enters his eight season as a defensive assistant, working primarily with the secondary in 2023.
Pettina has worked with 15 All-PSAC West and four All-American selections since his first season in 2015, including NFL prospect Max Redfield during IUP's national semifinal season of 2017. IUP nabbed 15 interceptions as a team in 2022, good for third in the conference.Â
Pettina was a four-year letterman for IUP from 1983-1986. In his four years as a player, IUP won the PSAC West three seasons, from 1984-1986. While also winning the state game in 1986.
Pettina is a 1987 graduate of IUP with a bachelor’s degree in finance.
Prior to returning to his alma mater, Pettina coached at Indiana Area High School. He was the secondary coach from 1999-2010. Then the co-defensive coordinator from 2011-2013.
Pettina and his wife, Cathy, are the parents of Jay and Alex.
