Tyler Haines finished his first season as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at IUP in 2013 after spending five years at Division III Adrian College in Michigan. He was the offensive coordinator for three seasons with the Bulldogs and also served as the assistant head coach. During his first two seasons he coached the linebackers and special teams.
In 2013, Haines called the plays for an IUP offense that averaged 36.4 points and 418.8 yards per game. The Crimson Hawks scored at least 40 points in five games, including a season high 62 points against Millersville. Haines guided the Crimson Hawk quarterbacks to 202.1 passing yards per game with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. De'Antwan Williams led a rushing attack that was third in the PSAC with 216.7 yards per game and 32 rushing touchdowns.
Directing one of the top offenses in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) in 2012, Haines helped Adrian to its first outright conference championship since 1983. Four different school single season records were set, including completion percentage (61.7 - Taylor Copacia), receptions (78 - Justin Hemm), receiving yards (1,209 - Hemm) and receiving touchdowns (10 - Hemm). Haines also helped eight different Bulldogs to postseason All-MIAA honors.
Haines called the plays in 2011 for a unit that averaged 393.8 yards and 32.5 points per contest. Those numbers ranked first in the MIAA. The Bulldogs ranked second in the MIAA with 172.2 rushing yards per game and put up 50 or more points in three games including a school-record 77 in a win at Husson University. Haines was instrumental at Adrian, beginning the season 7-0 and moving up to 16th in the AFCA Division III national poll on October 24. In total, five offensive players were named to the All-MIAA first or second teams.
Haines celebrated a 2010 season which proved to be a record-setting year on offense. The team averaged 386 yards per game and scored 25.9 points per contest. He mentored Second Team All-MIAA tailback Jared Edwards, who rushed for 1,011 yards for the season. Haines also coached Second Team All-MIAA performer Mike McGee. McGee set the single-season school record for completions (183), passing yards (2,302) and touchdowns (19). The offense also featured a strong offensive line anchored by First Team All-MIAA tackle Spencer Whittington and Second Team All-MIAA guard Nick Ross.
Haines, a two-time first-team All-Heartland Conference linebacker, lettered for three years at Defiance College, recording 143 tackles, 39 tackles-for-loss, 9.5 sacks, and four interceptions after transferring from Division II Ashland University. A 2006 pre-season All-American, Haines also garnered ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors and was named All-North Region at season’s end.
Also in 2006, Haines was a semi-finalist for the Draddy Trophy, an award known as the "Academic Heisman". He appeared on the dean’s list three times and ended college with a GPA north of 3.4.
The Piqua, Ohio native was part of a Yellow Jacket defense that finished fourth in the nation in total defense and led the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in rushing defense and total defense in 2005 and 2006. Haines was a team captain in both his junior and senior seasons for Defiance. He graduated from Defiance in December 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in integrated social studies.
At Piqua High School, Haines was a first-team All-Southwest Ohio linebacker and quarterback.
Haines spent the 2007 season coaching football at his alma mater, Piqua High School. He coached the wide receivers and defensive backs as the team compiled an 8-4 record and were regional semifinalists in Ohio’s Division II.
Tyler and his wife, Logan, reside in Indiana with their daughters Harper and Hadley.
