Dan Smay

Dan Smay enters the 2022-23 season as his first as a volunteer assistant coach with the Crimson Hawks. 

Prior to joining head coach Joe Lombardi’s staff, Smay was an assistant for the Clearfield High School boy’s basketball team for the last six years, part of a program that won six District 9 championships during that span.   

Smay also served as an assistant coach at Penn State Mont Alto from 2014-2016.  In his two-year stint, he helped lead the team to a PSUAC Conference Championship victory as well as finishing as the USCAA National Championship Tournament’s Runner-Up.  While at Penn State Mont Alto, the team went 41-20 overall, with a 26-8 conference record and broke into to top-five rankings nationally.

Smay was a graduate assistant with the Florida State Seminoles under Leonard Hamilton for two years and was also the assistant director of the Leonard Hamilton Basketball Camps.  While at Florida State he helped develop several basketball players that went on to play professionally, both in the NBA and in the Euro League. 

Smay graduated with a master’s in sport management from Florida State.  He holds his bachelor’s degree from Penn State Mont Alto in business management and was also captain of the basketball team while at Mont Alto.  Prior to college he enlisted and served in the United States Marine Corps for five years from 2004-2009.

Smay is currently the Assistant Director of Athletics and adjunct professor of Kinesiology at Penn State DuBois. During his tenure, Penn State DuBois has won the USCAA Director’s Cup Championship for overall athletic success in the country, as well as a pair of third-place President’s Cup’s for best overall student-athlete GPA in the country.

Smay currently lives in Indiana with his wife, Dr Brooke Smay.
