Shawna Bellaud enters her sixth season as IUP softball head coach in 2024. In all, this will be her 10th season with the Crimson Hawks after serving as the assistant coach from 2015-18.Â
Bellaud has a 79-96-1 overall record at IUP as she rebuilds her program with a young roster. She boasts an overall career record of 101-117-1 through six seasons as a collegiate head coach, spending the 2013 campaign at St. Anselm.Â
Bellaud recorded her 100th career head coaching victory in April 2023 against Pitt-Johnstown.Â
Â
IUP was in play for a berth in the PSAC Tournament until the final doubleheader of the season in 2023, finishing with a 26-23 mark, the most wins in a single season during Bellaud's coaching tenure and most wins for the program since 2016. Delaney Patella was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year and an All-PSAC West First Team honoree upon the conclusion of the season.Â
Patella was also awarded the Division II Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week honor, becoming the first IUP player to earn the national weekly award since 2004. Just the third player overall, Patella was a two-time PSAC West Athlete of the Week for the Hawks.Â
Â
The Crimson Hawks won 17 games in 2022, advancing to the conference tournament. The duo of Joelle Snyder and Jenna Rhue were named All-PSAC West selections in May 2022.Â
IUP posted a 17-15 mark in the program's return to action in 2021, just missing out on a conference tournament berth.Â
Â
Some of that potential growth was stunted early on in her second season as the COVID-19 pandemic forced a cancellation of the 2020 season after just 14 games.Â
Bellaud wrapped up her first season as head coach in 2019 with a 15-27-1 overall record, just missing out on postseason play with a 10-9 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. IUP has a 62-47 (.579) in divisional/league play during Bellaud's time at IUP. Â
Bellaud was part of four straight postseason appearances with the Crimson Hawks, as they've reached the PSAC tournament in four consecutive years from 2015-18.Â
Â
She's coached three All-Atlantic Region players, including shortstop Hannah Mercer (2015), second baseman Kaitlyn Beers (2018), and third baseman Renee Wall (2018). IUP has garnered 20Â All-PSACÂ players during that time as well, with Wall earning PSACÂ Central Softball Athlete of the Year in 2019.
In 2018, Bellaud also saw Beers and Wall earning PSACÂ Central Athlete and Freshman of the Year honors, respectively.
Pitchers Brooke Darling and Lauren Zola have also excelled, both earning all-conference honors in 2016. Zola was a four-year starter through 2019 and is fourth all-time with 442 career strikeouts.Â
Â
Bellaud came to the Crimson Hawks after spending the 2014 season as the director of video operations at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. Â
During her year at Coastal Carolina, the Chanticleers had a 41-15 overall record and advanced to the conference tournament championship game. Bellaud helped coach Kiana Quolas, the Big South Conference Pitcher of the Year, five first team all-conference selections, and one all-freshman honoree.  Â
Bellaud spent the 2013 season in her home state of New Hampshire as the head coach for the Saint Anselm Hawks, where she led them to a 22-21 record and the program's first postseason berth in five years. She coached the NE-10 Rookie of the Year and two all-conference players.Â
Prior to her season at Saint Anselm, she was a volunteer assistant at Coastal Carolina in the 2012 campaign where she was fortunate enough to work under a former head coach from her collegiate career, Kelley Green. That year, Bellaud helped lead the Chanticleers to a Big South tournament with a combined 44-20 record, as well as a NCAA Division I regional appearance. Â
Bellaud was also part of the 2009 NCAA Division II Coaching Staff of the Year at her alma mater, Lock Haven University. Along with this achievement, Bellaud and the Lady Eagles were able to capture the National Championship after winning the PSAC championship, along with the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship. Â
Â
Before playing at Lock Haven, Bellaud was an All-Conference First Teamer, team MVP, as well as the captain at New Hampshire Technical Institute for two seasons. After her time there, she transferred to Lock Haven. In her senior year, Bellaud was able to help the Lady Eagles finish third in the nation. Â
In addition to her previous coaching experiences, Bellaud has also been coaching the Hurricanes U18 softball team, located in Salem, N.H., since 2009. Â For two years prior, she served as the head coach of the NH Hammerheads U18 softball team in Hooksett, N.H. Â
Bellaud received her B.A. in accounting from Lock Haven in December 2009.
