Zach Shaver

Zach Shaver completed his seventh season as the IUP head volleyball coach in 2012 after guiding the Crimson Hawks to a 20-win season for the second time in three years.

Under Shaver, IUP saw its win total nearly double in 2012 thanks to a 13-3 start to the campaign. Shaver was also instrumental in the development of senior Morgan Cerveny, who received All-PSAC honors for the first time in 2012.

In 2011, Shaver successfully rebuilt a squad that lost several key contributors from 2010. Senior Danielle Ostendorf was selected to her second All-PSAC squad for her efforts and finished her career with 902 kills, which is eighth in IUP history.

Shaver's best season at IUP came in 2010, when the Crimson Hawks finished with a record of 21-11 and a trip to the NCAA tournament for the second time in Shaver's tenure. The season marked the first time IUP had eclipsed 20 wins under Shaver, and was highlighted by the selection of Emily Pany as the IUP Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The libero set the all-time PSAC record with 2,670 digs, and she holds three of the top 15 single-season dig totals in conference history.

In 2009, the Crimson Hawks finished 17-16 and were ranked eighth in the Atlantic Region at the end of the season. That would have qualified the Crimson Hawks for the NCAA tournament for the first time since Shaver's first team in 2006, but an automatic bid from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association denied the Crimson Hawks a spot in the eight-team field.

In addition to directing the IUP volleyball program, Shaver was selected by the Keystone Region Volleyball Association to be the head coach of the region's High Performance Girls' Select team in the summer of 2009. The team traveled to Fort Lauderdale, FL, in July and earned a silver medal at the USAV High Performance Championships.

Shaver's team completed the five-day tournament with their only loss coming in the championship match to Southern California. Shaver and assistant Shay Moreno have been chosen to lead the KRVA High Performance Girls' Select team in the 2010 championships in Wisconsin Dells in late July.

Shaver came to IUP from Texas State, where he served as an assistant coach since June 2002. Shaver was part of a coaching staff that turned around the fortunes of the Texas State volleyball program. After going 10-21 in 2002, the Bobcats had a record of 67-29 from 2003-05, won the Southland Conference title and played in the NCAA Division I tournament in 2004 and 2005.

Before heading to Texas State, Shaver was an assistant coach at his alma mater, California State-Chico, from January to December 2000. He was interim head coach at Chico State for four months from December 2000 to the following April.

Shaver was also the men's club team head coach at Chico State from 1998-01 and the women's club team head coach in 2002. Three times he led his squads to ninth place finishes at the NIRSA national championship tournament, including the men's team in 2000 and 2001 and the women's squad in 2002.

Shaver's experience also includes head coaching stints at a pair of high schools in California. He directed the volleyball program at Biggs High School from 1995-97 and Orland High School from 1997-2000. Shaver has also coached and directed club teams and served as an instructor at several volleyball camps.

Shaver earned his bachelor of arts degree in physical education from Chico State in 2002 and received his master of education degree in sport and recreation management from Texas State in 2006. While an undergraduate of Chico State, Shaver was a three-year setter on the men's club team.

Shaver and his wife, Sandra, are the parents of Nicole, Matthew and Brandon.
