Cheyney built a seven-point lead while holding IUP scoreless for the first 4:23 of the second overtime session and the host Wolves went on to post an 88-84 victory at Cope Hall, handing the Crimson Hawks their first loss of the season.

Darryl Webb led fourth-ranked IUP (11-1) with 27 points and 17 rebounds for his third straight double-double, seventh of the season and 27th of his career. Akida McLain finished with 20 points, followed by Julian Sanders with 17 and Kevin Stewart with 10.

Tyrone Smith scored a career-high 29 points for Cheyney (6-6) as the Wolves also ended IUP's seven-game winning streak in PSAC crossover games dating back to last season. Kevin Presbery added 17 points and Sharif Bray tallied 13.

The game included 57 fouls and 81 free throws, with IUP making 32 of 47 and Cheyney hitting 22 of 34.

Webb scored 46 points and grabbed 30 rebounds in the two games this weekend. He has career totals of 1,065 points, one behind Mike Matthews for 20th place in school history, and Webb's 653 rebounds tie him with Tom Kerstetter for sixth place in the IUP record book.

The game was tied at 69 after regulation after 76 following the first overtime period. In the second extra session, neither team could score until Bruce Kennedy's 3-pointer with 2:14 left triggered a 7-0 run that put Cheyney in command. The Wolves led 83-76 when Webb finally got IUP on the board with a 3-pointer with 37 seconds left.

A free throw by Presbery, a missed 3 by Sanders and two charity tosses by Smith made it 87-81 and wrapped up the Cheyney win.

The Crimson Hawks had a chance to win at the end of the first overtime period. Trailing 76-74, Ashton Smith made a driving layup with five seconds left and was fouled. But Smith could not finish the 3-point play, and Tyrone Smith missed a shot at the buzzer to force double overtime.

IUP found itself in its biggest hole of the season in the first half when Cheyney built a 33-20 lead with 4:29 remaining before intermission. But the Crimson Hawks used a 13-2 run and got within two on a pair of free throws by Sanders before the Wolves took a 37-33 lead into the break.

Stewart tied it at 40 with two free throws 2:38 into the second half, but IUP could not go in front until the midway part of the final 20 minutes of regulation. Stewart made two more free throws to tie it at 50 and then fed Webb for a dunk at the 10:44 mark. Webb was fouled and finished off the 3-point play for a 53-50 IUP lead.

The Crimson Hawks still led 68-65 with 1:44 left but Cheyney forged a tie at 69 when Tyrone Smith made two from the line with 23 seconds remaining. IUP had the final shot of regulation, but Ashton Smith was not able to connect, and the Crimson Hawks went into overtime for the first time since an 80-76 crossover win over West Chester last season.

IUP hosts Clarion Wednesday at 7:30 in the PSAC West opener for both teams.
