Boxscore

Four IUP players scored in double figures, including a career-high 13 by Scooter Renkin (Midlothian, VA/Blue Ridge), to power the Crimson Hawks to an 87-63 victory over Urbana to finish 2-0 at their Indiana Regional Medical Center Holiday Classic at Memorial Field House.

Willi Estrella (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Escuela sto Hermano Miguel) led IUP (5-2) with 16 points and Ashton Smith (Scarborough, ON/West Hill Collegiate) and Darryl Webb (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) also reached double figures with 14 and 10, respectively. Renkin hit 5 of 6 from the field, including 3 of 4 from 3-point distance, to eclipse his previous high of nine points.

Webb added 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season and 42nd of his career. The senior All-American increased his career scoring total to 1,529 points and moved within seven of passing Derrick Freeman for fourth place in school history. Webb also dished out four assists, tying him with Smith and Kevin Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Academy Park) for the team lead, and blocked two shots.

After scoring 20 points vs. Central State the night before, Julian Sanders (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) was limited to eight points but did make a pair of 3-pointers to move into a tie for fourth in the IUP record book with Eddie Peterson with a career total of 181. He is six behind third-place Aaron Faulkner.

The win was the 26th in a row for the Crimson Hawks at Memorial Field House, and the Crimson Hawks have not lost at home since a 73-57 loss to Gannon on January 24, 2009. IUP shot 54.1 percent from the field, held a 41-29 advantage on the boards and held Urbana to 38.7 percent accuracy from the floor.

Stefon Perry drained five 3-points and finished with 17 points to lead the Blue Knights (2-9). Sharif Muhammad added 14 points, six rebounds and three assists and Robert Wilson contributed 11 points.

IUP was never seriously threatened after a 19-0 run over a six-minute span turned a 10-8 deficit into a 27-10 lead with 9:04 left in the first half. Freshman Marcel Souberbielle (Montevideo, Uruguay/Uruguayan American School), who scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds, converted a layup to tie it at 10, and Sanders gave the Crimson Hawks the lead for good with a 3-pointer following an Urbana turnover.

Seven IUP players scored during the decisive run with Renkin drilling a 3-pointer that made it 19-10 and Estrella taking a feed from Stewart to lay it in to finish the surge. Estrella hit 5 of 10 shots in the first half and led the Crimson Hawks with 10 points in the period which ended with IUP in front 42-25.

The Crimson Hawks made it a runaway in the first 49 seconds of the second half, scoring seven quick points including a 3-point play by Webb and a tip-in off a Webb miss by Estrella. Urbana got as close as 13 at 58-45 on a 3 by Perry with 11:54 to go.

IUP reasserted control with a 13-6 run, rebuilding the lead to 71-51 on a Renkin 3-pointer with 7:30 to go, and the cushion eventually reached as high as 26 with just over a minute remaining.

The Crimson Hawks are back in action Saturday with a 3:30 game vs. Holy Family that will be played at DeGol Arena on the campus of St. Francis University. The game was moved from Memorial Field House due to a conflict with December graduation ceremonies that are scheduled in the building for the following day.
