INDIANA, PA –
Brittany Varacallo (New Britain/Central Bucks South) had nine saves, all in the first half, and limited second-ranked Shippensburg to just one goal in the first 35 minutes, but the Lady Raiders erupted in the second half as IUP lost 6-0 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover field hockey matchup on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Raiders (13-2, 7-0) bombarded Varacallo with shots early and often, but the goalie came up with saves time and time again. Shippensburg dominated the ball offensively in the opening half, getting off 13 shots and 13 corners compared to just two and two, respectively, for the Crimson Hawks.
The Lady Raiders put their first goal on the board with just three seconds left before the break, with Lauren Taylor finding Kristina Taylor to put Shippensburg up 1-0.
IUP was able to slow the Lady Raiders a little in the second half, but Shippensburg also became more efficient. The second shot of the second half by the Lady Raiders found the back of the cage, as Katie Pufnock deflected a Kristina Taylor at the 37:33 mark.
The Lady Raiders added their third goal 10 minutes later, and put in more in the final 22 minutes to gain the win.
The Crimson Hawks (9-5, 5-2) finish up their five-game home stand next week, hosting Bellarmine on Monday and Seton Hill on Wednesday, before hitting the road for the regular season finale at Slippery Rock on Sunday.
