IUP Names Stephen Hamill Head Field Hockey Coach

INDIANA, Pa. — Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) announced the appointment of Stephen Hamill as the eighth head field hockey coach in program history.

Hamill brings extensive experience as both a player and coach, joining the Crimson Hawks from Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland, where he served as head coach since 2022. He also worked as an assistant coach with Campbell College Belfast.

"I am pleased to welcome Stephen as our next head field hockey coach," IUP Director of Athletics Todd Garzarelli said. "He rose to the top of a talented candidate pool and offers a strong perspective on holistic student-athlete development. He came highly recommended and is a rising star in the field hockey community."

Hamill has worked closely with former Olympian Mark Gleghorne and has professional ties to former U.S. and Netherlands head coach Rutger Weise. Weise, who led IUP from 2003-09, guided the Crimson Hawks to three NCAA Final Four appearances and compiled a 96-39 record.

"I'm excited to lead this program into its next chapter," Hamill said. "The team has an excellent core group that is hungry for success. Despite some adversity last year, the team built a strong culture, and I am looking forward to building on it while sharpening our identity and taking the next step toward becoming a consistent competitive force in our conference. We're ready to get to work and build something special."

In addition to his coaching experience, Hamill competed internationally with Ireland's U-18 and U-16 teams.

He also served as head coach of the U-15 team at Royal Belfast Academical Institution from 2024-26 and worked as a regional coach with the Ulster U-13 to U-16 program from 2023-26.

Hamill earned a bachelor's degree in history from Queen's University Belfast in 2022. He completed a master's degree in sports coaching at Ulster University in 2025.
