Field Hockey Wraps Up Regular Season With Overtime Loss to Slippery Rock

Brielle Mackey had an assist but the Crimson Hawks couldn't hold on in overtime
Box Score

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA - Anouk Sickman (Antwerp, Belgium/Lazac Cellepe) scored her team-leading 15th goal of the season but the Crimson Hawks could not score in overtime, falling to Slippery Rock 2-1 in a preview of Tuesday's PSAC Quarterfinals. IUP finishes the regular season with a record of 10-6, 6-3 in the PSAC West.

The Rock took an early 1-0 advantage when Rebecca Coleman received a pass from Brittany Schultz and knocked in the back of the cage at the 5:17 mark.

That score would remain until late in the second half, when Sickman weaved through several Slippery Rock defenders and deposited the game-tying goal at the 64:38 mark. With the game knotted at 1-1 and neither team able to score the decisive goal the game would go into overtime.

It would not take long for The Rock to break the tie, however, as Grace Bathurst set up Gabrielle Malischack for the game-winning goal just 2:42 seconds into the first overtime. Sarah Lemieux (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman) and Brittany Varacallo (New Britain/Central Bucks South) once again split time in goal for the Crimson Hawks and combined for four saves.

With the win, the head-to-head season series between IUP and Slippery Rock is 1-1 heading into the Quarterfinals of the PSAC tournament. As the second seed in the PSAC West, the Crimson Hawks will host the Rock at Miller Stadium, where they defeated Slippery Rock 4-1 earlier this season. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
