IUP Swimmers Conclude Opening Weekend at Edinboro with Host of PSAC Qualifiers

EDINBORO, PA – The IUP women won seven events, including two each by Jackie Hynson (King George, VA/King George) and Allison Mitidieri, and Steve Long (Greensburg/Hempfield) chalked up another two wins for the men as the Crimson Hawks swim teams split with Edinboro on Saturday afternoon.

The women got a 118-87 victory while the men were closely beat out 107-98.

Hynson's time of 2:10.82 in the 200 back qualified her for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships, along with her 2:10.58 time in the 200 fly.

Mitidieri's wins came in the 200 IM and 200 breast, scoring times of 2:14.12 and 2:27.58, respectively, also both PSAC qualifying times.

Other individual wins for the IUP women came from Ally Long (Frederick, MD/Frederick) in the 1000 free (10:54.25), Ashley McAteer (Irwin/Penn-Trafford) in the 50 free (24:72) and Michelle Giordani (Sunbury/Line Mountain) in the 100 free (55.60). Long and McAteer's times were both PSAC qualifying times.

On the men's side, Long got his first win in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.74 before getting win number two in the 200 fly, finishing with a time of 2:02.09.

Doug McWhorter (Charlottesville, VA/Broadneck) and Anthony Termin (Enola/Cumberland Valley) also won events for the men, as McWhorter won the 50 free with a time of 22.50 and Termin was victorious in the 100 free with a time of 49.19.

Over the weekend, McAteer and Steve Long (Greensburg/Hempfield) set NCAA “B” standards in the 50 free and 100 fly respectively. While McAteer, Giordani, Ally Long (Frederick, MD/Frederick), Hynson, Mitidieri, Emily Shumaker (Carlisle/Big Spring) and Stephanie Soracco (Ingram/PA Cyber) all finished with PSAC qualifying times.

Both squads return to the pool on Friday, November 11 when they host Wheeling Jesuit at the John. A Pidgeon Natatorium.
