IUP Advances to PSAC Semifinals with Win Over Slippery Rock

Anouk Sickman scored each of IUP's goals on Tuesday as the Crimson Hawks advanced to the PSAC semifinals against Bloomsburg
Box Score

INDIANA, PA - Two first half goals by Anouk Sickman (Antwerp, Belgium/Lazac Cellepe) proved to be enough for IUP as the second seeded Crimson Hawks defeated third seed Slippery Rock 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament. The victory moves the Crimson Hawks into a semifinal matchup against top seed Bloomsburg on Friday at 1:00 p.m. in Shippensburg.

Besides an early corner by IUP, the Crimson Hawks weren't able to get anything going on the offensive end. The Rock had several chances to score in the first 10 minutes, but the IUP defense and goalie Brittany Varacallo (New Britain/Central Bucks South) turned each shot away, keeping the game scoreless.

That was until a corner by the Crimson Hawks eventually led to the first Sickman goal, getting a nice drop pass from Erin Shirk (Paradise/Pequea Valley), putting IUP up 1-0 at the 11:11 mark.

The Crimson Hawks (12-6) used that momentum to deny more chances of The Rock defensively, using that to get Sickman's second goal 11 minutes later, this time unassisted.

Both IUP and Slippery Rock would work to get a couple more shots on goal before halftime, but nothing was able to get through.

The second half was a battle of defenses, as each team was able to get off just one shot apiece. The Crimson Hawks did give themselves some chances to add to their lead, getting five corners, but in the end it didn't matter.

The semifinals and finals of the PSAC tournament are hosted by Shippensburg, as the Lady Raiders will face C.W. Post in the other semifinal matchup. The winners will face each other for the championship on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
