Darryl Webb (Elkridge, Md./Long Reach) had 13 of his game-high 16 points in the second half to help IUP pull away from Gannon by a score of 73-58 and in the process become the all-time leading scorer in school history.
Webb needed three points to break Robert Misenko's 15-year-old school mark and reached that figure when he made two free throws with 1:51 remaining in the first half. The senior All-American then broke out of a short offensive slump over the final 20 minutes and finished the day with a career total of 1,729 points.
Webb now holds three school career records, adding the scoring record to his top spots in rebounds (1,087) and blocked shots (140).
The win keeps IUP (14-5, 5-2 PSAC West) two games behind Mercyhurst in the loss column in the division standings. Slippery Rock is also 5-2 entering its game later Saturday night at Clarion. The Crimson Hawks are 28-7 in PSAC West play over the past three seasons.
Three other IUP players reached double figures, including 14 points by
Kevin Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa./Academy Park) which was one shy of his career high.
Willi Estrella (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Escuela sto Hermano Miguel) just missed his second consecutive double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds, and
Julian Sanders (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) finished with 11 points to move within 19 of reaching 1,000 in his career.
The Crimson Hawks shot an even 50 percent from the field, held a 31-26 advantage on the boards and forced 21 turnovers, including 11 steals. It was the second time this season that IUP used a big second half to defeat Gannon and ran its winning streak over the Golden Knights to four in a row.
Stewart provided the offensive spark in a first half in which everyone else wearing an IUP uniform struggled. Stewart hit a pair of 3-pointers and all six of his free throw attempts, including four in the final 1:26 of the opening half that gave the Crimson Hawks a 30-27 lead at intermission.
The second half was a different story. A layup by Sanders and a three-point play by
Ashton Smith (Scarborough, ON/West Hill Collegiate) opened the lead up to 35-27, and consecutive dunks by Danny Ayebo and Smith and a basket by
Scooter Renkin (Midlothian, VA/Blue Ridge) made it 43-32 with just over five minutes expired in the second half.
The Crimson Hawks then put the game away with a 10-1 run that began with two Estrella hoops and ended with three straight baskets by Webb, the final one giving IUP a 56-38 cushion with 8:43 remaining in the game. The Golden Knights got no closer than 12 the rest of the way.
The frontcourt duo of Webb and Estrella combined to make 10 of 15 shots in the second half, and IUP was 56.3 percent as a team over the final 20 minutes.
The Crimson Hawks made five 3-pointers in the game and now are within one of reaching 500 straight contests with at least one make from beyond the arc, last failing to do so in the PSAC championship game against California on March 5, 1994.
IUP returns home Wednesday for a 7:30 contest against California and will be looking for a season sweep over the Vulcans, having won 77-58 at Hamer Hall on Jan. 19. It will be IUP's first game at Memorial Field House since seeing its 30-game home winning streak end with a loss to Clarion two weeks ago.
