IUP Can’t Hold On, Falls to Edinboro

INDIANA, PA – Despite a strong second set rally to tie the match at 1-1, the Crimson Hawks couldn't hold on, falling to Edinboro in four sets in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Division volleyball match up on Saturday afternoon at the Kovalchick Complex.

Edinboro jumped out quickly in the first set, taking a 10-2 lead. After trading a pair of points each, the Fighting Scots went on a four-point run to go on top 16-4.

The Crimson Hawks fought back, scoring six of the next nine points, including three kills by Lauren Hester (State College, Pa. /State College), to climb within nine at 19-10. From there the Fighting Scots closed out the set, taking six of the last nine for the 25-13 win.

IUP took an early lead in set two 3-1, before giving up four straight points to the Fighting Scots to fall down by two. The Crimson Hawks then came right back, scoring nine of 12 points, including a run of six-straight to go on top 12-8.

The teams would trade points, but Edinboro would climb to within one at 20-19 before ultimately tying the score at 22-22. After back-and-forth points again, a kill by Hester and an Edinboro attacking error ended the match with IUP taking the 26-24 win.

The Crimson Hawks again got off to a good start in the third set, taking an 8-3 lead, but a seven-point run by Edinboro put the Fighting Scots on top by one.

IUP fought back to take a 15-14 lead, but Edinboro gained the momentum and outscored the Crimson Hawks 11-2 down the stretch to win 25-17.

The Fighting Scots continued that momentum to set four, taking control early and cruising to a 25-11 clinching win.

Hester finished with 11 kills for the Crimson Hawks, who fell to 7-8 overall on the season, 1-4 in the PSAC. Sarah Alman (Indiana/Indiana) saw increased playing time, getting 23 assists while Emily Vaughn (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) and Stacey Root (York/Spring Grove) had 13 and 12 digs, respectively.

The Crimson Hawks host Shepherd on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. before hitting the road for nearly the entire month of October, returning on the 28th against Gannon.
