INDIANA, PA – The Crimson Hawks weren't able to keep up their momentum from last night's three-set win as IUP fell to division-leading Clarion 3-0 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) volleyball match on Saturday at the KCAC.
Clarion took the first two sets 25-18 and 25-12 before rallying for a 25-21 set three win.
The loss drops IUP to 18-9 overall and 6-5 in PSAC play, ending the weekend in a three-way tie with Gannon and Mercyhurst for fourth place in the division.
Morgan Cerveny (Richfield, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) again led the team with 10 kills on Saturday while
Ericka Lentz (Reading/Holy Name) added six and
Sarah Alman (Indiana/Indiana) had 22 assists. Defensively,
Kelly Barnes (Inver Grove Heights, MN/Simley) finished with 19 digs and Lentz with 12.
In the opening set, the Crimson Hawks scored the first three points and later held a 7-6 lead after a kill by Lentz. Clarion then followed that up with three straight points and then went on a 7-0 run to jump out to a 17-9 lead.
IUP used a 4-0 run to cut its deficit to 20-15, but after a Clarion timeout the Golden Eagles scored five of the last eight points to gain the seven-point win.
Again the Crimson Hawks scored the first three points as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set. Clarion quickly tied it with three straight points for its own which jump started a 20-5 run for the Golden Eagles as they eventually took the set win by 13 points.
IUP took the early lead in the third set, going on top 4-1 before building a 9-3 lead on the strength of kills from Lentz, Cerveny and
Sarah Smiley (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington). Clarion started to chip away at that lead, however, scoring four of the next five points to cut the deficit to 10-7. The Golden Eagles then followed that up with a 7-1 run to take a 14-12 lead.
It was then IUP's turn to take control, as a kill by Cerveny was the first of seven straight points by the Crimson Hawks as they jumped on top 19-14. That lead wouldn't last long as the Crimson Hawks scored just two more points in the set with errors leading to an 8-1 run by Clarion to end the match.
IUP is away from the KCAC for the next two weeks as the Crimson Hawks visit California (PA) next Tuesday before traveling to Mercyhurst on Saturday.
