Box Score

MANSFIELD, PA - Chelsea Wanamaker (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley)'s goal with under two minutes to play proved to be the game-winner as the third-ranked IUP field hockey team rallied to defeat Mansfield 3-2 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action Saturday.

Locked in a 2-2 tie late in the second half, Wanamaker flipped a shot from eight yards out over the Mansfield goalkeeper's head and into the back of the cage with just 1:16 left to play. The Mountaineers would muster a pair of shots in the game's final minute, but the Crimson Hawks would hang on for their eighth consecutive victory.

Despite the late-game heroics from IUP, it was Mansfield who would hold the advantage early, jumping out to a 1-0 lead just one minute into the game thanks to a goal from Taryn Schawillie.

The Crimson Hawks would draw even at the 18:55 mark when Anouk Sickman (Antwerp, Belgium/Lazac Cellepe) finished off a penalty corner from Brielle Mackey (Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh), but the Mountaineers would respond.

Just nine seconds into the second half, Brianna Velepec took a pass from Lacey Croasdale and deposited the goal to give Mansfield a 2-1 lead with over 34 minutes to play.

IUP would answer in the 57th minute when Nicole Bruce (Clarks Summit/Lackawanna Trail) notched her team-leading 12th goal of the season off of an assist from Paige Mosner (Newton, NJ/Newton) that set up Wanamaker's game-winner.

Sarah Lemieux (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman) started the game in the cage for the Crimson Hawks and had two saves, while Brittany Varacallo (New Britain/Central Bucks South) played the entire second half and earned the win. As a team, IUP dominated Mansfield offensively, outshooting the Mountaineers 23-13.

With the win, the Crimson Hawks are now 12-2 overall a perfect 6-0 in the PSAC West. Mansfield falls to 4-9, 0-6 in the conference. IUP travels to rival Shippensburg this Tuesday for a rematch of the Crimson Hawks thrilling 3-1 win earlier this season. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
