Field Hockey Falls to West Chester in NCAA Quarterfinals

WEST CHESTER, PA – Kate Bruce (Clarks Summit/Lackawanna Trail) Scored a pair of goals but the IUP field hockey team saw its season come to an end with a 5-2 loss to second-seeded West Chester in the quarterfinals of the2012 NCAA Division II Tournament Saturday.

The Golden Rams drew first blood at the 7:43 mark when Michele Schrift scored off an assist from Kelsi Lykens, but the Crimson Hawks would find an answer midway through the first half when Casey McGowan (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) found Bruce for the goal to knot it at 1-1 with just over 20 minutes to play in the period.

West Chester would nudge back in front by a goal at the 18:56 mark when Kelsey Cheek took a pass from Kayla Gluchowski and deposited the goal to give the Golden Rams a 2-1 advantage. Cheek would tally her second goal of the afternoon with under three minutes to play in the half to give West Chester a 3-1 lead at the break.

Lykens would extend the Golden Ram lead to four goals in the second half with a penalty stroke goal and a score off of an assist from Stef Pirri and Nancy Stehman, but Bruce and McGowan would hook up for the second time for a goal as time expired to trim the final margin to three.

Sarah Lemieux (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman) played the entire game in the cage for the Crimson Hawks and had seven saves, while McGowan finished with a pair of assists. The Crimson Hawks finish the season with a record of 14-6 and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008.
