Morgan Cerveny (Richfield, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) smashed 23 kills and
Sarah Alman (Indiana/Indiana) had 54 assists and 23 digs as IUP won a marathon five-setter over Seton Hill in the nightcap to finish off a 1-1 afternoon on the second day of competition at the PSAC/WVIAC volleyball crossover at the Kovalchick Complex and the Memorial Field House on Saturday.
After back-and-forth play that saw both teams trade set victories, IUP took control in the fifth and deciding game by going on a 4-0 run to start. A quick timeout by Seton Hill would only help the Griffins gain a point, as the Crimson Hawks (10-2) responded with three straight to go on top 7-1. Seton Hill came back though, going on a 6-1 run to cut its deficit to 8-7.
Another IUP run gave the Crimson Hawks an 11-7 lead, but the Griffins refused to go away, getting the score back to 12-11. Both teams traded points, and as IUP held a 14-13 lead, Cerveny would put the match away with a kill off the hands of Alman to finish the set with a 15-13 win.
The Crimson Hawks took the first set 25-21 and nearly made it a 2-0 lead with a 22-21 lead in the second before Seton Hill scored four of the last five for a 25-23 victory. IUP responded in the third by going on top early 5-1 before losing the lead and going down 10-5. The Crimson Hawks battled back as a 6-0 run gave them a 17-14 as they edged out the third set 25-23. The Griffins tied it again in the fourth, getting on top big early en route to a 25-17 win.
Cerveny had her 23 kills on 43 total attacks with a .395 hitting percentage.
Lauren Hester (State College, Pa. /State College) also excelled with 16 kills while adding a pair of aces.
Meghan Schneider (Lake Geneva, Wis. /Big Foot) came off the bench and played well all around, notching six kills, two assists, nine digs and three total blocks.
IUP dropped the first match of the day to Charleston (WV) in four sets.
Aubree Frye (Indiana/Indiana) had 10 kills while Alman had 25 assists and
Kelly Barnes (Inver Grove Heights, MN/Simley) had 12 digs.
The Crimson Hawks are back in action on Tuesday in Ohio as they travel to Canton to play Malone.
