MANSFIELD, PA –
Dani Edwards (Milford/Delaware Valley) goal in the 76th minute was the game-winner as IUP scored a 3-2 overtime win at Mansfield in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) field hockey action on Tuesday afternoon.
The goal completed a comeback for the Crimson Hawks, who trailed 2-0 less than 12 minutes into the second half.
The Crimson Hawks controlled the ball for much of the last 25 minutes of play with seven shots on goal while Mansfield couldn't muster a single one.
IUP's first goal came in the 58th minute when
Casey McGowan (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) scored on a penalty stroke, her sixth goal of the season. A little over three minutes later,
Kate Bruce (Clarks Summit/Lackawanna Trail) knotted the score with a deflection over top of the goalie after a pass from
Chelsea Wanamaker (Oley, Pa./Oley Valley).
The Crimson Hawks came close to getting the win in regulation, but shots by Jessica Kida and Wanamaker in the final four minutes were turned away.
Mansfield couldn't get a good look in the overtime period, with IUP getting the first shot off as Wanamaker's attempt off a penalty corner in the 75th minute was saved. 30 seconds later, Edwards grabbed a pass from Wanamaker and knocked it in from five yards out for the game-winner.
IUP dominated offensively with 22 shots compared to Mansfield's four, while also holding the edge in corners 15-3.
With the win the Crimson Hawks improved to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in the PSAC. Mansfield is 3-9 and 0-6.
The Crimson Hawks are back in action on Friday night when they travel to face rival Slippery Rock at 5 p.m.
