Kate Bruce Leads Field Hockey to Double Overtime Victory Over Slippery Rock

Box Score

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA – A goal by Kate Bruce (Clarks Summit/Lackawanna Trail) in the waning minutes of the game's second overtime lifted the IUP field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Slippery Rock.

Bruce's goal came in the 97th minute as she snuck the golden goal past SRU goalie Carlee DuMars off a shot in front of the cage.

IUP was dominant for a majority of the game, although superb performances from both defenses as well as IUP goalie Darian Shuker (Reading, Pa./Exeter ) and DuMars prevented many scoring chances.

The Crimson Hawks got on the board first, when Jessica Kida took a pass from Bruce and got off a clean one-timer. The goal was Kida's team-leading eighth of the season.

The Rock responded four minutes later, knotting things up 1-1. In the 17th minute, Megan McKay snuck one past Shuker in the right corner of the cage.

That would be the final goal until Bruce's winner came 80 minutes later. Shuker made a key play in the 85th minute, when Lindsay Brown shot what appeared to be the game winning goal for The Rock, but an astounding save kept the game alive for the Crimson Hawks.

IUP controlled the game offensively, outshooting The Rock 22-6 and leading the way in penalty corners, 11-5.

With the win, the Crimson Hawks improve to 6-9 on the season. They'll host Bellarmine Thursday in a non-conference matchup at 4 p.m. at George P. Miller Stadium.
