No. 5 Field Hockey Heads to Bloomsburg for First Round of PSAC Tournament

BLOOMSBURG, PA – Following a regular season finale victory in which they clinched a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament berth, the field hockey team will travel to Bloomsburg Tuesday to take on the Huskies in the first round of postseason play.

It's a four vs. five matchup as the Crimson Hawks clinched the fifth seed with their 1-0 victory over No. 2 Millersville. Bloomsburg goes in as the fourth seed, clinching a tournament berth after defeating the Crimson Hawks 2-1 last Tuesday.

The winner of the game will move on to face top-seeded and undefeated Shippensburg in the semifinal round, Friday Nov. 8.

In the only matchup between the two teams this season, Bloomsburg came out on top, earning a 2-1 victory at George P. Miller Stadium. The Huskies got out to an early 1-0 lead when Sam Peters scored on a breakaway.

The Crimson Hawks responded as Kate Bruce (Clarks Summit/Lackawanna Trail) shot one past Bloomsburg goalie Megan Eppley.

It would remain scoreless for the remainder of regulation and the two teams entered a sudden-death overtime period.

Ten minutes into the overtime period, with Bloomsburg pressuring, Laura Gerhard shot the ball past IUP goalie Darian Shuker (Reading, Pa./Exeter ) and gave the Huskies the 2-1 victory.

Bloomsburg closed out their regular season with a 2-0 victory over Mercyhurst Saturday evening. They finished the year with a 12-6 (7-3) record. Their only conference losses came at the hands of Shippensburg, West Chester and Millersville who are ranked first, third and second in the conference, respectively.

IUP finishes its regular season with an 8-10 (5-5) record. After a slow start to the season, the Crimson Hawks won five of their final six games, with the only loss coming to Bloomsburg.

For IUP, Kate Bruce (Clarks Summit/Lackawanna Trail) and Jessica Kida are leading the offense with 10 goals apiece. Defender Casey McGowan (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) is second on the team with seven goals on the season.

Goalkeeper Darian Shuker (Reading, Pa./Exeter ) has started in all 18 games for IUP, recording a goals against average of 2.42. In her last five games, she has allowed just eight goals and made 21 saves.

As a team the Crimson Hawks have outscored opponents 57-45, with a majority of their goals coming in the second half. IUP has also outshot opponents taking 262 shots and only allowing 179.

For Bloomsburg, Felicia Domenici leads the team in goals (14) and points (32). Senior Brittany Matthews ranks second in both categories with 10 goals and 26 points.

Goalkeeper Eppley has a goals against average of just 1.22 and has made 67 saves on the season in her 18 games.

Tickets to Tuesday's game are $7 for adults and $2 for students. All students with a valid PSAC student ID will receive free entry.

The game is set to get underway from Sports Stadium in Bloomsburg at 4 p.m.
