Ericka Lentz (Reading/Holy Name) had 11 kills and
Kelly Barnes (Inver Grove Heights, MN/Simley) finished with 36 digs but IUP fell to Gannon in four sets as the Crimson Hawks celebrated women's volleyball Senior Night at the Kovalchick Complex on Saturday.
Lentz and Barnes, along with
Aubree Frye (Indiana/Indiana), were honored for their contributions to the program following the completion of the match.
The Crimson Hawks got the first win with a 26-24 victory in the opening set. Gannon then took the next three 25-21, 25-21 and 25-18.
The loss dropped the Crimson Hawks to 12-20 overall and 8-12 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). It also ended their late season run towards a conference postseason berth, eliminating them from contention. Gannon improves to 17-12 overall and 12-8 in the PSAC.
The first set consisted of 16 ties and five lead changes. The Crimson Hawks held a late 20-18 lead, scoring back-to-back points to force a Gannon timeout. The Golden Knights answered back with a 4-1 run and later held a 24-23 lead but IUP rattled off three straight points for the win.
The Crimson Hawks took a 10-5 lead in the second set, only to see Gannon rally to tie it at 13-13 with the help of a 5-0 run. It was later tied at 19-all when the Crimson Hawks scored back-to-back points, forcing a Gannon timeout. The timeout helped the Golden Knights, as they came out and six of the final eight points to tie the match at 1-1.
Gannon held an 8-4 lead in the third set but saw the Crimson Hawks battle back, as 4-0 and 3-0 runs helped them take a 14-13 lead. The set would go back and forth, with IUP taking a 21-20 lead to force a Gannon timeout. However, the break helped the Golden Knights as they scored the final five points of the set for the win.
The Golden Knights held the advantage throughout most of the final set, using a 5-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. The Crimson Hawks kept it close at 15-13, but Gannon pulled away and wrapped up the match victory with the seven-point win.
Elizabeth Sova (Myerstown, Pa. /ELCO) and
Stephanie Kruzynski (Oxford/Oxford) also posted double-figure kills with 11 and 10, respectively.
Meghan Schneider (Lake Geneva, Wis. /Big Foot) added nine and
Lisa Kissell (Greensburg, Pa. /Greensburg Salem) had eight.
Lindsay Moeller (Troy, Mich./Troy) had a game-high 47 assists.
In addition to Barnes' 36 digs, Lentz had 16 and
Joie Hrapla (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Bishop Canevin) finished with 15. The Crimson Hawks finished with 10 blocks on the night, with six block assists coming from Kruzynski. Sova and Schneider each had five total blocks.
The Crimson Hawks will wrap up their regular season next weekend with road matches at Slippery Rock and Edinboro.
