INDIANA, PA –
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) collected her second double-double of the season and
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) scored a game-high 16 points as the IUP women's basketball team defeated rival California 59-51 in overtime in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West play on Wednesday night.
The win was huge for the Crimson Hawks in a game that was a battle for PSAC tournament positioning. IUP now has, in essence, a three-game lead for third in the West with a conference record of 13-5 while the Vulcans are 11-7. It also gave the Crimson Hawks the season-sweep of their bitter rivals.
Stoner finished with 15 points and had a career-high 12 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. She went 4-of-10 from the field and 7-of-10 from the foul line.
Stamp nearly notched her second double-double of the season by adding nine rebounds. She finished 7-of-18 from the field in 35 minutes.
In a game of defense, the Crimson Hawks held a 21-20 halftime lead and used a couple of big buckets at the start of the second to go on top 29-23 with 17:32 to go. They would stay in control and kept the Vulcans at arm's length for most of the second, holding a 46-42 lead with 5:40 to go on the clock.
After Cal cut its deficit to one, Stamp drained a jumper with 1:03 to go to put IUP on top 50-47. However, Ryah Gadson knocked down a three-pointer on the other end to tie the score with 45 seconds to go. After a missed three-point attempt by Stamp with 22 seconds to go the Vulcans had one last shot to end it in regulation but the Crimson Hawks turned away two shots within the last five seconds to send the game to overtime.
It was all IUP in the extra period as the Crimson Hawks finished the game on an 8-0 run to gain the huge win.
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) added 12 points and six rebounds for the Crimson Hawks, who were playing their sixth-straight game without injured senior
Sarah Pastorek (Johnstown/Bishop McCort).
The Crimson Hawks are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Erie to take on Mercyhurst. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
