INDIANA, PA - Another excellent defensive performance by the IUP women's soccer team led to a 2-1 non-conference victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Monday afternoon at South Campus Field.
Despite a strong effort by opponent West Virginia Wesleyan, two early goals were all IUP needed to win the game.
Corner kicks were the key for the Crimson Hawks in scoring both of their goals. The first came early in the game from
Kelsey Fisher (Selinsgrove/Selinsgrove) in the seventh minute when
Brittney Kuhns (Middleburg, Pa. /Midd-West) sent a corner kick towards the goal and Fisher kicked it into the net to put IUP up 1-0.
Tonya Fabian (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) added an assist on the goal off a deflection.
Yet another corner kick led to the second goal of the game for IUP in the 16th minute of play. Fisher inbounded a corner kick, and a series of headers eventually led to a goal by Kuhns. This goal proved to be all IUP would need to earn the victory.
The Lady Bobcats worked hard to make it a close game, adding a goal in the middle of the second half. In the 27th minute, Hannah Gurtis sent a deep shot from near mid-field that found went just overtop of leaping goalkeeper
Mara Hricik (Moon Twp./Moon), making the score 2-1.
Although both teams produced strong drives in the second half, defense proved to be the key as neither team was able to find the back of the net for the rest of the game. West Virginia Wesleyan put up one final shot in the 89th minute, but Hricik was able to make the save.
IUP improves to 4-1 (3-1) and will travel to Shippensburg to take on the Raiders at 2 p.m. September 18. The Raiders currently hold a record of 3-1 (2-1).
