INDIANA, PA –
Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) went for a double-double and
Shawn Dyer (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding) scored a season-high to help lift the 24th-ranked IUP men's basketball team to a huge 92-51 win over visiting Mansfield on Tuesday night at the Kovalchick Complex.
Chance posted 18 points and a career-high 10 assists while Dyer finished with a game-high 23 as the Crimson Hawks busted out of a two-game losing streak, improving to 8-2 on the year and an even 2-2 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Mansfield falls to 4-4 and 2-3.
The IUP defense was hot all night, forcing Mansfield into 33 turnovers, the most by an IUP opponent since forcing Thiel into 40 back on Nov. 21, 2005.
Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown) helped the cause with a season-high five steals while Chance swiped four.
The Crimson Hawks also came up huge on the glass, outrebounding Mansfield 35-22 on the night. The Mountaineers came into the game third in the PSAC with a rebounding margin of +8.1.
Mansfield gave the Crimson Hawks fits early, taking a 15-13 lead with a layup in traffic by Ralik Wise with 10:40 to play in the first half. IUP responded with an 11-2 run, highlighted by a fastbreak layup by Chance off of a steal to put the Crimson Hawks on top 24-17 with 6:28 on the clock.
A 9-0 run by the Crimson Hawks a few minutes later put them on top 33-20 before heading into the locker room on top by 15 points with a 42-27 halftime lead.
Chance gave IUP a 20-point lead at 49-29 with a three-ball less than a minute into the second half. Another three-pointer by the point guard a few minutes later followed by another steal and transition layup made it a 30-point game at 65-35 with 14:14 to go.
He posted his 10th assist when
Stefan Osborne (Victoria, Australia/St. Patrick's College) knocked down a three-pointer to make it a 69-38 game with 10:42 to go.
Dyer did most of his damage in the first half, scoring 14 points in 18 minutes of work. He finished the night shooting 8-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. He also went 2-of-3 from the foul line, grabbed six rebounds and had three assists.
Norfleet was the third IUP player in double-figures, scoring 15 while dishing out three assists. Osborne scored nine points in 15 minutes off the bench, all on three-pointers, while
Tevin Hanner (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) added eight in the scoring column.
After scoring nine points in the first 7:10 of action, Mansfield's Charles Pemberton finished with a team-high 17 points in 31 minutes of play, the only Mountaineers player in double-figures.
Earlier in the day, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) released its national ranking, with the Crimson Hawks bumping back one spot to No. 24.
The game was the first of back-to-back PSAC crossover games, as the Crimson Hawks will host Lock Haven (2-5, 2-2) tomorrow night at the Kovalchick Complex.
