INDIANA, PA – Four Crimson Hawks scored in double-figures as the 24th-ranked IUP men's basketball team defeated visiting Lock Haven 92-69 on Wednesday night at the Kovalchick Complex.
Brandon Norfleet (Virginia Beach, Va. /Landstown) led IUP with a season-high 21 points, as the Crimson Hawks shot 60.0 percent from the floor for their second consecutive win after dropping two straight. They improve to 9-2 overall on the season and 3-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Lock Haven falls to 2-6 and 2-3.
The Crimson Hawks shot the lights out in the first half, going 21-of-28 (75 percent) from the floor, including 8-of-12 from three-point range.
They opened with the game's first eight points and added runs of 9-0 and 9-2, helping them take a 53-35 lead into halftime. Norfleet led the way in the first 20 minutes, scoring 13 points while
Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) had 11 at the break. Four other Crimson Hawks scored at least six points, adding to IUP's balanced first half.
IUP extended its lead to 21 early in the second half on a three-pointer by Norfleet, going on top 58-37. Lock Haven later pushed back by scoring six straight points, narrowing its deficit to 11 at 62-51 with 11:09 to go in the game.
The Crimson Hawks responded by scoring six consecutive points of their own, followed by another 9-2 run to take a 24-point lead at 79-55 with 5:47 to go, shutting down any chance the Bald Eagles would have had. They would go on to lead by as many as 27 before finishing off Lock Haven by 23.
Norfleet finished 9-of-16 from the field, draining a pair of three-pointers and adding five rebounds, five assists and three steals in 28 minutes of work.
Chance went for 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting, dishing out six assists and grabbing four boards.
Daddy Ugbede (San Mateo, Calif./Serra), getting his second consecutive start, went a perfect 6-for-6 from the field and added four foul shots to finish with 16 points.
Jeremy Jeffers (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School) added 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and tallied a career-high seven assists.
Also on the night,
Devon Cottrell (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Gateway) had three blocks, improving his career total to 105 and moving into second place all-time at IUP. He's now 57 behind Darryl Webb's all-time mark of 162.
Wali Hepburn led Lock Haven with 23 points, going 9-of-15 from the field. He had six rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
It was the second straight night IUP tallied exactly 92 points, finishing its mid-week PSAC crossover action with a pair of wins against Mansfield (Tuesday) and Lock Haven. It was also the fourth time in 11 games the Crimson Hawks have scored at least 90 points. They shot a combined 68-of-122 (55.7 percent) during the two crossover games, making 24-of-47 (51.1 percent) from three-point range.
The Crimson Hawks will have one more game in 2014 as they play in another PSAC crossover matchup, heading east to face Bloomsburg (6-3, 2-3) on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
