Devante Chance (Philadelphia, Pa. /Electrical & Technology Charter) with seconds left sent the game to overtime, but the fifth-ranked Crimson Hawks couldn't finish off Gannon as they lost to the Golden Knights 61-56 in extra time at the Hammermill Center on Saturday night.
Chance's bucket tied the game at 51-51 right after the Golden Knights took a two-point lead on a jumper by Girbran Smith with 23 seconds to go.
Neither team scored for the first two minutes of the overtime period, as
Daddy Ugbede (San Mateo, Calif./Serra) gave the Crimson Hawks a one point lead after splitting a pair of free throws. The lead would then change hands on successive trips down the floor, with
Jeremy Jeffers (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School) giving IUP a 54-53 lead on a pair of free throws with 2:01 to go and Ugbede putting the Crimson Hawks on top 56-55 with a layup at the 1:13 mark.
Raphael Thomas-Edwards gave Gannon a 57-56 on its next possession and after a missed three-pointer by
Shawn Dyer (Marion, Ohio/Marion Harding), scored another bucket to give the Golden Knights a three-point lead with 19 seconds to play.
Chance would again try to tie the game, but his three-point attempt with six seconds to go in overtime bounced off the rim and Gannon gained control, hitting its free throws to secure the victory.
It was IUP's second straight defeat at the hands of a school from Erie, as the Crimson Hawks fell to Mercyhurst at home on Wednesday. IUP falls to 7-2 overall on the season and 1-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Gannon is now a perfect 4-0 in the Western Division despite a 4-4 overall record.
Dyer led the Crimson Hawks with 16 points, hitting 4-of-10 from three-point range on the night, to go along with five rebounds and three steals in 39 minutes.
Chance played 44 minutes, finishing with nine points and three assists. Ugbede came off the bench to score 13 points in 24 minutes, going 4-of-6 from the field and 5-of-6 from the foul line.
Thomas-Edwards was the only Golden Knights player in double-figures with a game-high 22 points, also pulling down 12 rebounds.
The game was tight all night long with 10 ties and 20 lead changes. IUP's largest lead of the night was seven at 47-40 with 7:33 to go in the game, while Gannon's largest lead of five didn't come until the final free throws at the end of overtime.
The shooting percentages were nearly identical with Gannon shooting 44.6 while IUP shot 43.5. The Crimson Hawks forced Gannon into 16 turnovers, but were outrebounded 41-to-20.
IUP will now have to wait 10 days to get back on the court, as the Crimson Hawks host Mansfield in PSAC crossover action on Tuesday, Dec. 16.
