WEST CHESTER, PA –
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) and
Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) each picked up singles wins as IUP competed on the first day of the 2014 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Tennis Individual Championships at West Chester University on Saturday.
It rained early and often in West Chester, with a majority of the matches postponed until tomorrow. Singles matches were also changed to eight-game pro sets in attempt to shorten time of play.
Gonzalez matched up with Shippensburg's Emily Cox, defeating her by a score of 8-2. Von Agris defeated East Stroudsburg's Allison Bean 8-1. Gonzalez will face Sara Ruiz of Seton Hill on Sunday, who moved to the second round after defeating Erin Reitenauer of Bloomsburg 8-1. Von Agris will match up with the winner of a match between Slippery Rock's Carla Corrochano and Mercyhurst's Sarah Baich.
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston), who earned the number one seed in the women's bracket, received a bye and will face the winner of a match between Bloomsburg's Lindsey Tennis and Shippensburg's Julia Saintz.
Play will pick back up on Sunday at 8 a.m., with champions in both singles and doubles on the men's and women's sides to be crowned. Each match will be an eight-game pro set until at least the semifinals.
