WEST CHESTER, PA –
Tanya Timko (Cannonsburg, PA/Chartiers-Houston) fell in the semifinals while two other IUP players advanced to the quarterfinals on the final day of the 2014 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Tennis Individual Championships on Sunday.
Both of IUP's doubles teams also lost in the second round of the championships, which was hosted by West Chester University.
Due to rain most of Saturday, some matches were moved to day two while the scoring for all early round competitions was shortened.
After receiving a bye in the opening round, Timko defeated Shippensburg's Julia Saintz 6-1 in round two. She then ended the day of teammate
Raquel Gonzalez (San Sebastian, Spain/Colegio Sagrado Corazon) in the quarterfinals, defeating her by a score of 6-4.
Her championship run ended when she lost to Saoia Gomez of Mercyhurst 7-5 in the semifinals.
In addition to Gonzalez,
Luise Von Agris (Castrop-Rauxel Germany/Adalbet-Stifter-Gymnasium) also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Sara Baich of Mercyhurst 7-6(2) before falling to Oranza Carrillo of Edinboro 7-6(5). Carrillo entered the weekend as the fourth seed in the tournament.
Gonzalez defeated Sara Ruiz of Seton Hill 6-3 in the second round to advance to her quarterfinal matchup with Timko.
On the doubles side, Timko and Von Agris defeated Carrillo and Julia Hellstern 7-5 in the opening round before losing to West Chester's Clarie Uhle and Maddy Shaak 6-1 in the second.
Alanna McFail (Fort Washington, Md. /St. John's College ) and Gonzalez beat Amina Dickson and Allison Bean of East Stroudsburg 6-2 and then lost to Cal's Lucie Rey and Ramona Czakon – the top seed – by a score of 6-1.
Next up for the Crimson Hawks are the 2014 ITA Atlantic Region Championships, which are hosted by Mercyhurst University Saturday through Sunday, Sept. 20-22.
