Women’s Volleyball Comeback Falls Short to Rival Cal

INDIANA, PA – The Crimson Hawks' thrilling fourth set win to tie the match at 2-2 was all for naught as  IUP fell to rival California (PA) in an exciting five-set women's volleyball match on Friday night at the Kovalchick Complex.

Down 2-1, IUP battled for a 28-26 fourth set victory, rallying from a 22-18 deficit to score 10 of the last 14 points. The Crimson Hawks went on a 5-0 run to take a 23-22 lead before both teams traded the next seven points as neither was able to take control. IUP finally ended things with back-to-back kills by Lauren Hester (State College, Pa. /State College) and Gabrielle Egler (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Obama Academy) for the victory.

The Vulcans responded by taking an early 6-1 lead in the fifth set, but IUP clawed back, going on a 6-4 run to cut its deficit to 10-7. Cal then came back with four straight points, eventually closing things with a 15-9 fifth set victory.

The loss gives the Crimson Hawks an even 6-6 overall record on the season, as they also fall to 2-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Cal improves to 9-5 and 3-2.

Hester led the way for IUP with 15 kills on 59 total attacks, collecting 10 digs, two service aces and a pair of block assists. Elizabeth Sova (Myerstown, Pa. /ELCO) added 10 kills to go along with a season-high eight blocks.

Alexis Anderson (Cleveland, Ohio/Mayfield) and Lily McWilliams (Rockville, Md./Thomas Sprigg Wootton) each had six kills while Egler added five. Lindsay Moeller (Troy, Mich./Troy) finished with a team-high 26 assists.

Defensively, Joie Hrapla (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Bishop Canevin) collected a season-high 30 digs while Kaitlyn Palmer (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) had 15. Anderson also had three total blocks on the night, including two solo.

The Vulcans took the opening set 25-21 but IUP rallied for a 25-23 second set victory. Cal seemingly took control of the match in the third set with a 25-13 victory before the Crimson Hawks rallied back.

IUP is back in action tomorrow afternoon, hosting Seton Hill (13-1, 4-1) at the Memorial Fieldhouse. First serve is set for noon.
