SLIPPERY ROCK, PA - As a team, the No. 17 Crimson Hawks posted an IUP record for fewest turnovers in a game (five) in Saturday's 73-48 victory over Slippery Rock, Saturday at the Morrow Field House in Slippery Rock.
Ashley Stoner (Pittsburgh, Pa. /Thomas Jefferson) allowed three turnovers, with
Marita Mathe (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana) giving up two, however no more than five total were allowed. This low number beat the previous record of six, which was set against Edinboro in 1991. This week proved to be a drastic change from the Crimson Hawks' performance last Saturday, when the team tallied 26 turnovers in their first loss of the season to California (Pa.).
Helping IUP find their 15th win of the season was
Lindsay Stamp (Erie, Pa. /Mercyhurst Prep) who earned her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds, in addition to her one assist and one steal.
Mathe attacked first for the Crimson Hawks with a three-pointer, just seconds after the start of the game. The IUP offense pushed forward and scored 31 points by the six minute mark, with the defense holding Slippery Rock to a mere 10.
Like many of their other games, the Crimson Hawks went into halftime on top with a 39-21 lead which carried them into the second half with confidence. Throughout the entire 40 minutes of play, Slippery Rock was never able to grab hold of the lead.
Stamp led the team in scoring and rebounds, but Mathe and
Zhane Brooks (Erie, Pa. /Villa Maria) also posted double-figure points. Mathe ended the night with 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Coming off the bench for IUP, Brooks saw 24 minutes on the court, and recorded 12 points, five rebounds, three assists, one block and two steals.
This competition saw all Crimson Hawks getting playing time on the court. True freshman
Megan Smith (Blain, Pa./West Perry) finished the game with a season-high seven points, while
Marina Wareham (New Wilmington, Pa. /Kennedy Catholic) posted four of her own.
Starter
Leslie Stapleton (Indiana, Pa. /Indiana), who was up against her younger sister, SRU's Audrey Stapleton, owned 18 points on the night.
This victory over Slippery Rock marked IUP's 15th consecutive win against SRU, who last defeated the Crimson Hawks in 2006.
The Crimson Hawks, now 15-1, 11-1 in the PSAC, return to the Kovalchick Complex Wednesday, January 21, to host Pitt-Johnstown. Tipoff against the Lady Cats is set for 5:30 p.m.
